British Olympic Medical Institute moves to Bisham Abbey

The British Olympic Medical Institute moved its clinic and rehabilitation programme to Bisham Abbey earlier this month. The team of physio’s, physiologists, nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches and related sports specialists will now be based at Bisham Abbey taking up to any four British Olympic athletes at any one time and providing them with a rehabilitation programme second to none, each athlete will experience the full wealth of knowledge, guidance and training from a broad spectrum of specialists whilst staying full board in the abbey’s newly converted bedroom suites.

The British Olympic Medical Institute exists to ensure the highest quality of sports science, medicine and therapy support to Team GB in preparation for, and at, all International Olympic Committee (IOC) accredited events, including the summer and winter Olympic Games. In order to achieve this, it is committed to working closely with the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and the Home Country Sports Institutes (HCSIs).

The Intensive Rehabilitation Unit is now based at the High Performance Centre, Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire. Run in partnership with the English Institute of Sport, this service is available to UK world class funded athletes from both summer and winter sports, across all the home nations. This multi-disciplinary residential service aims to provide timely, intensive rehabilitation to compliment and add value to an athlete’s recovery from surgery and/or injury. Referrals can be received either directly from the NGB or from the HCSI support staff.

The Bisham Abbey team were introduced to the programme through a presentation by Greg Retter the rehabilitation manager and the team are thrilled to be involved in this exciting new project, which aims to be pushing the expectations and boundaries of medical support and rehabilitation not only in the UK but hopefully worldwide. We wish the programme continuing success and look forward to being part of its future.
